Sirach 7

1 Do no evils, and no evils shall lay hold of thee. 2 Depart from the unjust, and evils shall depart from thee. 3 My son, sow not evils in the furrows of injustice, and thou shalt not reap them sevenfold. 4 Seek not of the Lord a pre-eminence, nor of the king the seat of honour. 5 Justify not thyself before God, for he knoweth the heart: and desire not to appear wise before the king. 6 Seek not to be made a judge, unless thou have strength enough to extirpate iniquities: lest thou fear the person of the powerful, and lay a stumblingblock for thy integrity. 7 Offend not against the multitude of a city, neither cast thyself in upon the people, 8 Nor bind sin to sin: for even in one thou shalt not be unpunished. 9 Be not fainthearted in thy mind: 10 Neglect not to pray, and to give alms. 11 Say not: God will have respect to the multitude of my gifts, and when I offer to the most high God, he will accept my offerings. 12 Laugh no man to scorn in the bitterness of his soul: for there is one that humbleth and exalteth, God who seeth all. 13 Devise not a lie against thy brother: neither do the like against thy friend. 14 Be not willing to make any manner of lie: for the custom thereof is not good. 15 Be not full of words in a multitude of ancients, and repeat not the word in thy prayer. 16 Hate not laborious works, nor husbandry ordained by the most High. 17 Number not thyself among the multitude of the disorderly. 18 Remember wrath, for it will not tarry long. 19 Humble thy spirit very much: for the vengeance on the flesh of the ungodly is fire and worms. 20 Do not transgress against thy friend deferring money, nor despise thy dear brother for the sake of gold. 21 Depart not from a wise and good wife, whom thou best gotten in the fear of the Lord: for the grace of her modesty is above gold. 22 Hurt not the servant that worketh faithfully, nor the hired man that giveth thee his life. 23 Let a wise servant be dear to thee as thy own soul, defraud him not of liberty, nor leave him needy. 24 Hast thou cattle? have an eye to them: and if they be for thy profit, keep them with thee. 25 Hast thou children? instruct them, and bow down their neck from their childhood. 26 Hast thou daughters? have a care of their body, and shew not thy countenance gay towards them. 27 Marry thy daughter well, and then shalt do a great work, and give her to a wise man. 28 If thou hast a wife according to thy soul, cast her not off: and to her that is hateful, trust not thyself. With thy whole heart, 29 Honour thy father, and forget not the groanings of thy mother: 30 Remember that thou hadst not been born but through them: and make a return to them as they have done for thee. 31 With all thy soul fear the Lord, and reverence his priests. 32 With all thy strength love him that made thee: and forsake not his ministers. 33 Honour God with all thy soul, and give honour to the priests, and purify thyself with thy arms. 34 Give them their portion, as it is commanded thee, of the firstfruits and of purifications: and for thy negligences purify thyself with a few. 35 Offer to the Lord the gift of thy shoulders, and the sacrifice of sanctification, and the firstfruits of the holy things: 36 And stretch out thy hand to the poor, that thy expiation and thy blessing may be perfected. 37 A gift hath grace in the sight of all the living, and restrain not grace from the dead. 38 Be not wanting in comforting them that weep, and walk with them that mourn. 39 Be not slow to visit the sick: for by these things thou shalt be confirmed in love. 40 In all thy works remember thy last end, and thou shalt never sin.

1 Ne fais pas le mal, et le mal ne te saisira pas ; 2 éloigne-toi de ce qui est injuste, et l’injuste s’éloignera de toi. 3 Mon fils, ne sème point dans les sillons de l’injustice, si tu ne veux pas récolter sept fois autant. 4 Ne demande pas au Seigneur le pouvoir,
ni au roi un siège d’honneur. 5 N’essaie pas de paraître juste devant le Seigneur,
et ne cherche pas à paraître sage devant le roi. 6 Ne cherche pas à devenir juge,
de peur que tu n’aies pas la force d’extirper l’injustice,
de peur que tu ne sois intimidé en présence d’un puissant,
et que tu ne mettes en péril ton équité. 7 N’offense pas toute la population d’une ville,
et ne te jette pas au milieu de la foule. 8 Ne lie pas deux fois le péché,
car même pour un seul tu ne seras pas impuni. 9 Ne dis pas : « Dieu considérera la multitude de mes dons,
et, quand je les offrirai au Dieu très haut, il les recevra. » 10 Ne sois pas pusillanime dans ta prière,
et ne néglige pas de faire l’aumône. 11 Ne te moque pas de l’homme dont le cœur est affligé,
car il y en a un qui abaisse et qui élève. 12 Ne forge point de mensonge contre ton frère ;
ne fais point pareille chose contre ton ami. 13 Garde-toi de dire aucun mensonge,
car le mensonge continu ne tourne pas à bien. 14 Ne bavarde pas dans la compagnie des vieillards,
et ne répète pas les paroles de ta prière. 15 Ne hais pas les labeurs pénibles,
ni le travail des champs institué par le Très-Haut. 16 Ne te mets pas parmi le plus grand nombre des pécheurs ;
souviens-toi que la vengeance ne tardera pas. 17 Humilie profondément ton âme,
car le feu et le ver sont le châtiment de l’impie. 18 N’échange pas un ami pour de l’argent, ni un frère pour l’or d’Ophir. 19 Ne te détourne pas d’une épouse intelligente et bonne ;
car son charme vaut mieux que l’or. 20 Ne maltraite pas l’esclave qui travaille fidèlement,
ni le mercenaire qui se dévoue à ton service. 21 Aime l’esclave intelligent ;
ne le prive pas de la liberté. 22 As-tu des troupeaux, prends-en soin,
et, s’ils te sont utiles, garde-les chez toi. 23 As-tu des fils, instruis-les,
et plie-les au joug dès leur enfance. 24 As-tu des filles, veille à leur chasteté,
et n’aie pas avec elle un visage jovial. 25 Marie ta fille, et tu auras fini une grosse affaire ;
et donne-la à un homme intelligent. 26 As-tu une femme selon ton cœur, ne la répudie pas ;
[mais ne te donne pas à une femme qui t’est contraire]. 27 Honore ton père de tout ton cœur,
et n’oublie pas les douleurs de ta mère. 28 Souviens-toi que c’est par eux que tu es venu au monde :
et comment leur rendras-tu ce qu’ils t’ont donné ? 29 Crains le Seigneur de toute ton âme, et tiens ses prêtres en grand honneur. 30 Aime de toutes tes forces Celui qui t’a fait, et ne délaisse pas ses ministres. 31 Crains le Seigneur et honore le prêtre ; donne-lui sa part, comme il a été prescrit dès l’origine : la victime pour le délit avec le don des épaules, la sainte oblation et les prémices. 32 Tends aussi la main au pauvre, afin que ta bénédiction soit complète. 33 Donne gracieusement à tout vivant, et ne refuse pas ton bienfait au mort. 34 Ne fais pas défaut à ceux qui pleurent, et afflige-toi avec les affligés. 35 Ne néglige pas de prendre soin des malades ; pour de tels actes de charité tu seras aimé de Dieu. 36 Dans toutes tes actions souviens-toi de ta fin, et tu ne pécheras jamais.
