Section: III. — LES VOYAGES À JÉRUSALEM. · A. — Premier voyage.

He took them and withdrew apart to a desert region of a city called Bethsaida.11But the multitudes, perceiving it, followed him. He welcomed them, spoke to them of God’s Kingdom, and he cured those who needed healing.12The day began to wear away; and the twelve came and said to him, “Send the multitude away, that they may go into the surrounding villages and farms and lodge and get food, for we are here in a deserted place.”13But he said to them, “You|strong="G5210" give|strong="G1325" them|strong="G3588" something|strong="G4183" to|strong="G1519" eat|strong="G2068".” They said, “We have no more than five loaves and two fish, unless we should go and buy food for all these people.”14For they were about five thousand men. He said to his disciples, “Make|strong="G2625" them|strong="G3588" sit|strong="G2625" down|strong="G2625" in|strong="G4314" groups|strong="G2828" of|strong="G3101" about|strong="G5616" fifty|strong="G4004" each|strong="G1438".”15They did so, and made them all sit down.16He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to the sky, he blessed them, broke them, and gave them to the disciples to set before the multitude.17They ate and were all filled. They gathered up twelve baskets of broken pieces that were left over.18As he was praying alone, the disciples were near him, and he asked them, “Who|strong="G5101" do|strong="G5101" the|strong="G1722" multitudes|strong="G3793" say|strong="G3004" that|strong="G3588" I|strong="G1473" am|strong="G1510"?”19They answered, “‘John the Baptizer,’ but others say, ‘Elijah,’ and others, that one of the old prophets has risen again.”20He said to them, “But|strong="G1161" who|strong="G5101" do|strong="G5101" you|strong="G5210" say|strong="G3004" that|strong="G3588" I|strong="G1473" am|strong="G1510"?” Peter answered, “The Christ of God.”21But he warned them and commanded them to tell this to no one,22saying, “The|strong="G2532" Son|strong="G5207" of|strong="G5207" Man|strong="G5207" must|strong="G1163" suffer|strong="G3958" many|strong="G4183" things|strong="G3588", and|strong="G2532" be|strong="G2532" rejected by|strong="G2532" the|strong="G2532" elders|strong="G4245", chief|strong="G2532" priests, and|strong="G2532" scribes|strong="G1122", and|strong="G2532" be|strong="G2532" killed, and|strong="G2532" the|strong="G2532" third|strong="G5154" day|strong="G2250" be|strong="G2532" raised|strong="G1453" up|strong="G1453".”23He said to all, “If|strong="G1487" anyone|strong="G5100" desires|strong="G2309" to|strong="G4314" come|strong="G2064" after|strong="G2596" me|strong="G1473", let|strong="G1161" him|strong="G3588" deny|strong="G3588" himself|strong="G1438", take|strong="G1161" up|strong="G2532" his|strong="G1438" cross|strong="G4716",and|strong="G2532" follow|strong="G3694" me|strong="G1473". 24For|strong="G1063" whoever|strong="G3739" desires|strong="G2309" to|strong="G2309" save|strong="G4982" his|strong="G1438" life|strong="G5590" will|strong="G2309" lose it|strong="G1161", but|strong="G1161" whoever|strong="G3739" will|strong="G2309" lose his|strong="G1438" life|strong="G5590" for|strong="G1063" my|strong="G1473" sake|strong="G1752" will|strong="G2309" save|strong="G4982" it|strong="G1161". 25For|strong="G1063" what|strong="G5101" does|strong="G5101" it|strong="G1161" profit|strong="G5623" a|strong="G2228" man|strong="G5101" if|strong="G1161" he|strong="G1161" gains|strong="G2770" the|strong="G1161" whole|strong="G3650" world|strong="G2889", and|strong="G1161" loses or|strong="G2228" forfeits|strong="G2210" his|strong="G1438" own|strong="G1438" self? 26For|strong="G1063" whoever|strong="G3739" will|strong="G2532" be|strong="G2532" ashamed|strong="G1870" of|strong="G5207" me|strong="G1473" and|strong="G2532" of|strong="G5207" my|strong="G1699" words|strong="G3056", of|strong="G5207" him|strong="G3588" will|strong="G2532" the|strong="G1722" Son|strong="G5207" of|strong="G5207" Man|strong="G3778" be|strong="G2532" ashamed|strong="G1870" when|strong="G3752" he|strong="G2532" comes|strong="G2064" in|strong="G1722" his|strong="G1722" glory|strong="G1391", and|strong="G2532" the|strong="G1722" glory|strong="G1391" of|strong="G5207" the|strong="G1722" Father|strong="G3962", and|strong="G2532" of|strong="G5207" the|strong="G1722" holy angels. 27But|strong="G1161" I|strong="G3739" tell|strong="G3004" you|strong="G5210" the|strong="G1161" truth: There|strong="G1161" are|strong="G1510" some|strong="G5100" of|strong="G2316" those|strong="G3588" who|strong="G3739" stand|strong="G2476" here|strong="G1510" who|strong="G3739" will|strong="G2316" in|strong="G2316" no|strong="G3756" way|strong="G3739" taste|strong="G1089" of|strong="G2316" death|strong="G2288" until|strong="G2193" they|strong="G1161" see|strong="G3708" God|strong="G2316"’s Kingdom.” 28About eight days after these sayings, he took with him Peter, John, and James, and went up onto the mountain to pray.29As he was praying, the appearance of his face was altered, and his clothing became white and dazzling.30Behold, two men were talking with him, who were Moses and Elijah,31who appeared in glory and spoke of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.32Now Peter and those who were with him were heavy with sleep, but when they were fully awake, they saw his glory, and the two men who stood with him.33As they were parting from him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here. Let’s make three tents: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah,” not knowing what he said.34While he said these things, a cloud came and overshadowed them, and they were afraid as they entered into the cloud.35A voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him!”36When the voice came, Jesus was found alone. They were silent, and told no one in those days any of the things which they had seen.37On the next day, when they had come down from the mountain, a great multitude met him.38Behold, a man from the crowd called out, saying, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for he is my only born child.39Behold, a spirit takes him, he suddenly cries out, and it convulses him so that he foams; and it hardly departs from him, bruising him severely.40I begged your disciples to cast it out, and they couldn’t.”41Jesus answered, “Faithless and|strong="G2532" perverse|strong="G1294" generation|strong="G1074", how|strong="G2193" long|strong="G2193" shall|strong="G2532" I|strong="G2532" be|strong="G1510" with|strong="G4314" you|strong="G5210" and|strong="G2532" bear|strong="G2532" with|strong="G4314" you|strong="G5210"? Bring|strong="G4317" your|strong="G2532" son|strong="G5207" here|strong="G5602".”42While he was still coming, the demon threw him down and convulsed him violently. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, healed the boy, and gave him back to his father.43They were all astonished at the majesty of God. But while all were marveling at all the things which Jesus did, he said to his disciples,44“Let|strong="G1063" these|strong="G3778" words|strong="G3056" sink|strong="G5087" into|strong="G1519" your|strong="G5087" ears|strong="G3775", for|strong="G1063" the|strong="G1519" Son|strong="G5207" of|strong="G5207" Man|strong="G3778" will|strong="G3195" be|strong="G3195" delivered|strong="G3860" up|strong="G3860" into|strong="G1519" the|strong="G1519" hands|strong="G5495" of|strong="G5207" men|strong="G3778".”45But they didn’t understand this saying. It was concealed from them, that they should not perceive it, and they were afraid to ask him about this saying.46An argument arose among them about which of them was the greatest.47Jesus, perceiving the reasoning of their hearts, took a little child, and set him by his side,48and said to them, “Whoever|strong="G3739" receives|strong="G1209" this|strong="G3778" little|strong="G3398" child|strong="G3813" in|strong="G1722" my|strong="G1722" name|strong="G3686" receives|strong="G1209" me|strong="G1473". They went and entered into a village of the Samaritans, so as to prepare for him.53They didn’t receive him, because he was traveling with his face set toward Jerusalem.54When his disciples, James and John, saw this, they said, “Lord, do you want us to command fire to come down from the sky and destroy them, just as Elijah did?”55But he turned and rebuked them, “You don’t know of|strong="G1161" what|strong="G1161" kind of|strong="G1161" spirit you are. 56For|strong="G1519" the|strong="G2532" Son of|strong="G2532" Man|strong="G2087" didn’t come|strong="G2532" to|strong="G1519" destroy men’s lives, but|strong="G2532" to|strong="G1519" save them|strong="G2532".” They went to another village.57As they went on the way, a certain man said to him, “I want to follow you wherever you go, Lord.”58Jesus said to him, “The|strong="G2532" foxes have|strong="G2192" holes|strong="G5454" and|strong="G2532" the|strong="G2532" birds|strong="G4071" of|strong="G5207" the|strong="G2532" sky|strong="G3772" have|strong="G2192" nests|strong="G2682", but|strong="G1161" the|strong="G2532" Son|strong="G5207" of|strong="G5207" Man|strong="G3756" has|strong="G2192" no|strong="G3756" place|strong="G4226" to|strong="G2532" lay|strong="G2827" his|strong="G2192" head|strong="G2776".”59He said to another, “Follow|strong="G1161" me|strong="G1473"!” But he said, “Lord, allow me first to go and bury my father.”60But Jesus said to him, “Leave the|strong="G1161" dead|strong="G3498" to|strong="G3004" bury|strong="G2290" their|strong="G1438" own|strong="G1438" dead|strong="G3498", but|strong="G1161" you|strong="G4771" go and|strong="G1161" announce God|strong="G2316"’s Kingdom.”61Another also said, “I want to follow you, Lord, but first allow me to say good-bye to those who are at my house.”62But Jesus said to him, “No|strong="G3762" one|strong="G3762", having|strong="G2532" put|strong="G1911" his|strong="G1519" hand|strong="G5495" to|strong="G1519" the|strong="G2532" plow and|strong="G2532" looking|strong="G2424" back|strong="G3694", is|strong="G1510" fit|strong="G2111" for|strong="G1519" God|strong="G2316"’s Kingdom.”
