Section: A. — La Passion.

1 It was now two days before the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread, and the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might seize him by deception and kill him. 2 For they said, “Not during the feast, because there might be a riot among the people.” 3 While he was at Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at the table, a woman came having an alabaster jar of ointment of pure nard—very costly. She broke the jar and poured it over his head. 4 But there were some who were indignant among themselves, saying, “Why has this ointment been wasted? 5 For this might have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and given to the poor.” So they grumbled against her. 6 But Jesus said, “Leave her|strong="G1438" alone|strong="G1438". He sought how he might conveniently deliver him. 12 On the first day of unleavened bread, when they sacrificed the Passover, his disciples asked him, “Where do you want us to go and prepare that you may eat the Passover?” 13 He sent two of his disciples and said to them, “Go|strong="G5217" into|strong="G1519" the|strong="G2532" city|strong="G4172", and|strong="G2532" there|strong="G2532" a|strong="G2532" man|strong="G1519" carrying a|strong="G2532" pitcher|strong="G2765" of|strong="G2532" water|strong="G5204" will|strong="G2532" meet|strong="G3588" you|strong="G5210". This|strong="G3778" is|strong="G1510" my|strong="G1325" body|strong="G4983".” 23 He took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave to them. He said to his disciples, “Sit|strong="G2523" here|strong="G5602" while|strong="G2193" I|strong="G3739" pray|strong="G4336".” 33 He took with him Peter, James, and John, and began to be greatly troubled and distressed. 34 He said to them, “My|strong="G1473" soul|strong="G5590" is|strong="G1510" exceedingly|strong="G1510" sorrowful|strong="G4036", even|strong="G2532" to|strong="G2532" death|strong="G2288". Couldn’t|strong="G3588" you|strong="G3004" watch|strong="G1127" one|strong="G1520" hour|strong="G5610"? 38 Watch|strong="G1127" and|strong="G2532" pray|strong="G4336", that|strong="G2443" you|strong="G2532" may|strong="G2532" not|strong="G3361" enter|strong="G1519" into|strong="G1519" temptation|strong="G3986". It|strong="G2532" is|strong="G3588" enough. The|strong="G2532" hour|strong="G5610" has|strong="G5610" come|strong="G2064". Behold|strong="G2400", the|strong="G2532" Son|strong="G5207" of|strong="G5207" Man|strong="G1519" is|strong="G3588" betrayed|strong="G3860" into|strong="G1519" the|strong="G2532" hands|strong="G5495" of|strong="G5207" sinners. 42 Arise|strong="G1453"! Let’s get|strong="G1453" going. Behold|strong="G2400", he|strong="G3588" who|strong="G3588" betrays|strong="G3860" me|strong="G1473" is|strong="G3588" at|strong="G3588" hand|strong="G1448".” 43 Immediately, while he was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, came—and with him a multitude with swords and clubs, from the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders. 44 Now he who betrayed him had given them a sign, saying, “Whomever I will kiss, that is he. Seize him, and lead him away safely.” 45 When he had come, immediately he came to him and said, “Rabbi! Rabbi!” and kissed him. 46 They laid their hands on him and seized him. 47 But a certain one of those who stood by drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear. 48 Jesus answered them, “Have|strong="G2532" you|strong="G3004" come|strong="G1831" out|strong="G1831", as|strong="G5613" against|strong="G1909" a|strong="G5613" robber|strong="G3027", with|strong="G3326" swords|strong="G3162" and|strong="G2532" clubs|strong="G3586" to|strong="G2532" seize me|strong="G1473"? 49 I|strong="G1473" was|strong="G1510" daily|strong="G2250" with|strong="G1722" you|strong="G5210" in|strong="G1722" the|strong="G1722" temple|strong="G2411" teaching|strong="G1321", and|strong="G2532" you|strong="G5210" didn’t|strong="G3588" arrest|strong="G2902" me|strong="G1473". But|strong="G2532" this|strong="G3588" is|strong="G1510" so|strong="G2443" that|strong="G2443" the|strong="G1722" Scriptures|strong="G1124" might|strong="G2532" be|strong="G1510" fulfilled|strong="G4137".” 50 They all left him, and fled. 51 A certain young man followed him, having a linen cloth thrown around himself over his naked body. The young men grabbed him, 52 but he left the linen cloth and fled from them naked. 53 They led Jesus away to the high priest. All the chief priests, the elders, and the scribes came together with him. 54 Peter had followed him from a distance, until he came into the court of the high priest. He was sitting with the officers, and warming himself in the light of the fire. 55 Now the chief priests and the whole council sought witnesses against Jesus to put him to death, and found none. 56 For many gave false testimony against him, and their testimony didn’t agree with each other. 57 Some stood up and gave false testimony against him, saying, 58 “We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and in three days I will build another made without hands.’” 59 Even so, their testimony didn’t agree. 60 The high priest stood up in the middle, and asked Jesus, “Have you no answer? What is it which these testify against you?” 61 But he stayed quiet, and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?” 62 Jesus said, “I|strong="G1473" am|strong="G1510". You|strong="G3004" will|strong="G1510" see|strong="G3708" the|strong="G2532" Son|strong="G5207" of|strong="G1537" Man|strong="G5207" sitting|strong="G2521" at|strong="G1537" the|strong="G2532" right|strong="G1188" hand|strong="G1188" of|strong="G1537" Power|strong="G1411", and|strong="G2532" coming|strong="G2064" with|strong="G3326" the|strong="G2532" clouds|strong="G3507" of|strong="G1537" the|strong="G2532" sky|strong="G3772".” 63 The high priest tore his clothes and said, “What further need have we of witnesses? 64 You have heard the blasphemy! What do you think?” They all condemned him to be worthy of death. 65 Some began to spit on him, and to cover his face, and to beat him with fists, and to tell him, “Prophesy!” The officers struck him with the palms of their hands. 66 As Peter was in the courtyard below, one of the maids of the high priest came, 67 and seeing Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said, “You were also with the Nazarene, Jesus!” 68 But he denied it, saying, “I neither know nor understand what you are saying.” He went out on the porch, and the rooster crowed. 69 The maid saw him and began again to tell those who stood by, “This is one of them.” 70 But he again denied it. After a little while again those who stood by said to Peter, “You truly are one of them, for you are a Galilean, and your speech shows it.” 71 But he began to curse and to swear, “I don’t know this man of whom you speak!” 72 The rooster crowed the second time. Peter remembered the words that Jesus said to him, “Before he thought about that, he wept.
