1Then the Pharisees and some of the scribes gathered together to him, having come from Jerusalem.2Now when they saw some of his disciples eating bread with defiled, that is unwashed, hands, they found fault.3(For the Pharisees and all the Jews don’t eat unless they wash their hands and forearms, holding to the tradition of the elders.4They don’t eat when they come from the marketplace unless they bathe themselves, and there are many other things which they have received to hold to: washings of cups, pitchers, bronze vessels, and couches.)5The Pharisees and the scribes asked him, “Why don’t your disciples walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat their bread with unwashed hands?”6He answered them, “Well|strong="G2573" did|strong="G2573" Isaiah|strong="G2268" prophesy|strong="G4395" of|strong="G4012" you|strong="G5210" hypocrites|strong="G5273", as|strong="G5613" it|strong="G3754" is|strong="G3588" written|strong="G1125",‘This|strong="G3778" people|strong="G2992" honors|strong="G5091" me|strong="G1473" with|strong="G4012" their|strong="G4012" lips|strong="G5491",but|strong="G1161" their|strong="G4012" heart|strong="G2588" is|strong="G3588" far|strong="G4206" from|strong="G3588" me|strong="G1473".7They|strong="G1161" worship|strong="G4576" me|strong="G1473" in|strong="G1161" vain|strong="G3155",teaching|strong="G1321" as|strong="G1161" doctrines|strong="G1319" the|strong="G1161" commandments|strong="G1778" of|strong="G1319" men.’8“For|strong="G2316" you set aside the|strong="G3588" commandment|strong="G1785" of|strong="G2316" God|strong="G2316", and|strong="G2316" hold|strong="G2902" tightly to|strong="G2316" the|strong="G3588" tradition|strong="G3862" of|strong="G2316" men|strong="G3588"—the|strong="G3588" washing of|strong="G2316" pitchers and|strong="G2316" cups, and|strong="G2316" you do|strong="G3588" many other|strong="G3588" such|strong="G3588" things|strong="G3588".”9He said to them, “Full well|strong="G2573" do|strong="G2532" you|strong="G5210" reject the|strong="G2532" commandment|strong="G1785" of|strong="G2316" God|strong="G2316", that|strong="G2443" you|strong="G5210" may|strong="G2532" keep|strong="G5083" your|strong="G2532" tradition|strong="G3862". 10For|strong="G1063" Moses|strong="G3475" said|strong="G3004", ‘Honor|strong="G5091" your|strong="G5091" father|strong="G3962" and|strong="G2532" your|strong="G5091" mother|strong="G3384";’and|strong="G2532", ‘He|strong="G2532" who|strong="G3588" speaks|strong="G3004" evil|strong="G2551" of|strong="G2532" father|strong="G3962" or|strong="G2228" mother|strong="G3384", let|strong="G1063" him|strong="G3588" be|strong="G2532" put|strong="G5053" to|strong="G2532" death|strong="G2288".’11But is to say, given to God,12“then|strong="G3765" you|strong="G4160" no|strong="G3762" longer|strong="G3765" allow him|strong="G3588" to|strong="G4160" do|strong="G4160" anything|strong="G3762" for|strong="G4160" his|strong="G4160" father|strong="G3962" or|strong="G2228" his|strong="G4160" mother|strong="G3384", 13making|strong="G4160" void the|strong="G2532" word|strong="G3056" of|strong="G3056" God|strong="G2316" by|strong="G2532" your|strong="G2532" tradition|strong="G3862" which|strong="G3739" you|strong="G5210" have|strong="G2532" handed|strong="G3860" down|strong="G3860". He entered into a house and didn’t want anyone to know it, but he couldn’t escape notice.25For a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit, having heard of him, came and fell down at his feet.26Now the woman was a Greek, a Syrophoenician by race. She begged him that he would cast the demon out of her daughter.27But Jesus said to her, “Let|strong="G1510" the|strong="G2532" children|strong="G5043" be|strong="G1510" filled|strong="G5526" first|strong="G4413", for|strong="G1063" it|strong="G2532" is|strong="G1510" not|strong="G3756" appropriate to|strong="G2532" take|strong="G2983" the|strong="G2532" children|strong="G5043"’s bread and|strong="G2532" throw it|strong="G2532" to|strong="G2532" the|strong="G2532" dogs|strong="G2952".” 28But she answered him, “Yes, Lord. Yet even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.”29He said to her, “For|strong="G1223" this|strong="G3778" saying|strong="G3004", go|strong="G5217" your|strong="G1223" way|strong="G5217". They begged him to lay his hand on him.33He took him aside from the multitude privately and put his fingers into his ears; and he spat and touched his tongue.34Looking up to heaven, he sighed, and said to him, “Ephphatha is, “Be|strong="G1510" opened|strong="G1272"!”35Immediately his ears were opened, and the impediment of his tongue was released, and he spoke clearly.36He commanded them that they should tell no one, but the more he commanded them, so much the more widely they proclaimed it.37They were astonished beyond measure, saying, “He has done all things well. He makes even the deaf hear and the mute speak!”
