1but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.2Now very early in the morning, he came again into the temple, and all the people came to him. He sat down and taught them.3The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman taken in adultery. Having set her in the middle,4they told him, “Teacher, we found this woman in adultery, in the very act.5Now in our law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. What then do you say about her?”6They said this testing him, that they might have something to accuse him of. But Jesus stooped down and wrote on the ground with his finger.7But when they continued asking him, he looked up and said to them, “He|strong="G1161" who|strong="G3588" is|strong="G3588" without|strong="G5613" sin among|strong="G4314" you|strong="G5210", let|strong="G1161" him|strong="G3588" throw the|strong="G1161" first|strong="G4413" stone|strong="G3037" at|strong="G1909" her|strong="G3588".” 8Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground with his finger.9They, when they heard it, being convicted by their conscience, went out one by one, beginning from the oldest, even to the last. Jesus was left alone with the woman where she was, in the middle.10Jesus, standing up, saw her and said, “Woman|strong="G1135", where|strong="G4226" are|strong="G1510" your|strong="G2532" accusers|strong="G2725"? Did|strong="G2532" no|strong="G3762" one|strong="G3762" condemn|strong="G2632" you|strong="G4771"?”11She said, “No one, Lord.” Jesus said, “Neither|strong="G3761" do|strong="G2532" I|strong="G1473" condemn|strong="G2632" you|strong="G4771". Go|strong="G4198" your|strong="G2962" way|strong="G4198". From|strong="G2532" now|strong="G1161" on|strong="G4198", sin no|strong="G3762" more|strong="G3371".”12Again, therefore, Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I|strong="G1473" am|strong="G1510" the|strong="G1722" light|strong="G5457" of|strong="G1722" the|strong="G1722" world|strong="G2889".He|strong="G3588" who|strong="G3588" follows|strong="G3004" me|strong="G1473" will|strong="G1510" not|strong="G3756" walk|strong="G4043" in|strong="G1722" the|strong="G1722" darkness|strong="G4653", but|strong="G3361" will|strong="G1510" have|strong="G2192" the|strong="G1722" light|strong="G5457" of|strong="G1722" life|strong="G2222".”13The Pharisees therefore said to him, “You testify about yourself. Your testimony is not valid.”14Jesus answered them, “Even|strong="G2532" if|strong="G2579" I|strong="G1473" testify|strong="G3140" about|strong="G4012" myself|strong="G1683", my|strong="G1473" testimony|strong="G3141" is|strong="G1510" true|strong="G3588", for|strong="G3754" I|strong="G1473" know|strong="G1492" where|strong="G4226" I|strong="G1473" came|strong="G2064" from|strong="G2064", and|strong="G2532" where|strong="G4226" I|strong="G1473" am|strong="G1510" going|strong="G5217"; but|strong="G1161" you|strong="G5210" don’t|strong="G3588" know|strong="G1492" where|strong="G4226" I|strong="G1473" came|strong="G2064" from|strong="G2064", or|strong="G2228" where|strong="G4226" I|strong="G1473" am|strong="G1510" going|strong="G5217". 15You|strong="G5210" judge|strong="G2919" according|strong="G2596" to|strong="G2596" the|strong="G2596" flesh|strong="G4561". I|strong="G1473" judge|strong="G2919" no|strong="G3756" one|strong="G3762". 16Even|strong="G2532" if|strong="G1437" I|strong="G1473" do|strong="G2919" judge|strong="G2919", my|strong="G1699" judgment|strong="G2920" is|strong="G1510" true|strong="G3588", for|strong="G3754" I|strong="G1473" am|strong="G1510" not|strong="G3756" alone|strong="G3441", but|strong="G1161" I|strong="G1473" am|strong="G1510" with|strong="G2532" the|strong="G2532" Father|strong="G3962" who|strong="G3588" sent|strong="G3992" me|strong="G1473". 17It|strong="G2532"’s also|strong="G2532" written|strong="G1125" in|strong="G1722" your|strong="G5212" law|strong="G3551" that|strong="G3754" the|strong="G1722" testimony|strong="G3141" of|strong="G2532" two|strong="G1417" people|strong="G1510" is|strong="G1510" valid.18I|strong="G1473" am|strong="G1510" one|strong="G3588" who|strong="G3588" testifies|strong="G3140" about|strong="G4012" myself|strong="G1683", and|strong="G2532" the|strong="G2532" Father|strong="G3962" who|strong="G3588" sent|strong="G3992" me|strong="G1473" testifies|strong="G3140" about|strong="G4012" me|strong="G1473".”19They said therefore to him, “Where is your Father?” Jesus answered, “You|strong="G4771" know|strong="G1492" neither|strong="G3777" me|strong="G1473" nor|strong="G3777" my|strong="G1473" Father|strong="G3962". If|strong="G1487" you|strong="G4771" knew|strong="G1492" me|strong="G1473", you|strong="G4771" would|strong="G2532" know|strong="G1492" my|strong="G1473" Father|strong="G3962" also|strong="G2532".”20Jesus spoke these words in the treasury, as he taught in the temple. Yet no one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come.21Jesus said therefore again to them, “I|strong="G1473" am|strong="G1473" going|strong="G5217" away|strong="G5217", and|strong="G2532" you|strong="G5210" will|strong="G2532" seek|strong="G2212" me|strong="G1473", and|strong="G2532" you|strong="G5210" will|strong="G2532" die in|strong="G1722" your|strong="G2532" sins. Where|strong="G3699" I|strong="G1473" go|strong="G5217", you|strong="G5210" can|strong="G1410"’t|strong="G3588" come|strong="G2064".” 22The Jews therefore said, “Will he kill himself, because he says, ‘Where|strong="G3699" I|strong="G1473" am|strong="G1473" going|strong="G5217", you|strong="G5210" can|strong="G1410"’t|strong="G3588" come|strong="G2064"’?”23He said to them, “You|strong="G5210" are|strong="G1510" from|strong="G1537" beneath|strong="G2736". However, he|strong="G2532" who|strong="G3739" sent|strong="G3992" me|strong="G1473" is|strong="G1510" true|strong="G3588"; and|strong="G2532" the|strong="G2532" things|strong="G3778" which|strong="G3739" I|strong="G1473" heard from|strong="G3844" him|strong="G3588", these|strong="G3778" I|strong="G1473" say|strong="G2980" to|strong="G1519" the|strong="G2532" world|strong="G2889".”27They didn’t understand that he spoke to them about the Father.28Jesus therefore said to them, “When|strong="G3752" you|strong="G3752" have|strong="G2532" lifted|strong="G5312" up|strong="G5312" the|strong="G2532" Son|strong="G5207" of|strong="G5207" Man|strong="G3778", then|strong="G3767" you|strong="G3752" will|strong="G1510" know|strong="G1097" that|strong="G3754" I|strong="G1473" am|strong="G1510" he|strong="G2532", and|strong="G2532" I|strong="G1473" do|strong="G4160" nothing|strong="G3762" of|strong="G5207" myself|strong="G1683", but|strong="G2532" as|strong="G2531" my|strong="G1473" Father|strong="G3962" taught|strong="G1321" me|strong="G1473", I|strong="G1473" say|strong="G3004" these|strong="G3778" things|strong="G3778". 29He|strong="G2532" who|strong="G3588" sent|strong="G3992" me|strong="G1473" is|strong="G1510" with|strong="G3326" me|strong="G1473". The|strong="G2532" Father hasn’t|strong="G3588" left me|strong="G1473" alone|strong="G3441", for|strong="G3754" I|strong="G1473" always|strong="G3842" do|strong="G4160" the|strong="G2532" things|strong="G3588" that|strong="G3754" are|strong="G1510" pleasing to|strong="G2532" him|strong="G3588".”30As he spoke these things, many believed in him.31Jesus therefore said to those Jews who had believed him, “If|strong="G1437" you|strong="G5210" remain|strong="G3306" in|strong="G1722" my|strong="G1699" word|strong="G3056", then|strong="G3767" you|strong="G5210" are|strong="G1510" truly|strong="G1722" my|strong="G1699" disciples|strong="G3101". 32You|strong="G5210" will|strong="G2532" know|strong="G1097" the|strong="G2532" truth, and|strong="G2532" the|strong="G2532" truth will|strong="G2532" make|strong="G2532" you|strong="G5210" free|strong="G1659".” 33They answered him, “We are Abraham’s offspring, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How do you say, ‘You|strong="G4771" will|strong="G1510" be|strong="G1096" made|strong="G1096" free|strong="G1658"’?”34Jesus answered them, “Most certainly I|strong="G3754" tell|strong="G3004" you|strong="G5210", everyone|strong="G3956" who|strong="G3588" commits|strong="G4160" sin is|strong="G1510" the|strong="G3956" bondservant of|strong="G1401" sin. 35A|strong="G1519" bondservant doesn’t|strong="G3588" live in|strong="G1722" the|strong="G1722" house|strong="G3614" forever|strong="G1519". A|strong="G1519" son|strong="G5207" remains|strong="G3306" forever|strong="G1519". 36If|strong="G1437" therefore|strong="G3767" the|strong="G3588" Son|strong="G5207" makes|strong="G1659" you|strong="G5210" free|strong="G1658", you|strong="G5210" will|strong="G1510" be|strong="G1510" free|strong="G1658" indeed|strong="G3689". 37I|strong="G1473" know|strong="G1492" that|strong="G3754" you|strong="G5210" are|strong="G1510" Abraham’s offspring, yet|strong="G5210" you|strong="G5210" seek|strong="G2212" to|strong="G2212" kill me|strong="G1473", because|strong="G3754" my|strong="G1699" word|strong="G3056" finds no|strong="G3756" place|strong="G5562" in|strong="G1722" you|strong="G5210". 38I|strong="G1473" say|strong="G2980" the|strong="G2532" things|strong="G3588" which|strong="G3739" I|strong="G1473" have|strong="G2532" seen|strong="G3708" with|strong="G3844" my|strong="G3708" Father|strong="G3962"; and|strong="G2532" you|strong="G5210" also|strong="G2532" do|strong="G4160" the|strong="G2532" things|strong="G3588" which|strong="G3739" you|strong="G5210" have|strong="G2532" seen|strong="G3708" with|strong="G3844" your|strong="G2532" father|strong="G3962".”39They answered him, “Our father is Abraham.” Jesus said to them, “If|strong="G1487" you|strong="G1487" were|strong="G1510" Abraham’s children|strong="G5043", you|strong="G1487" would|strong="G2532" do|strong="G4160" the|strong="G2532" works|strong="G2041" of|strong="G2532" Abraham. 40But|strong="G1161" now|strong="G1161" you|strong="G5210" seek|strong="G2212" to|strong="G2212" kill me|strong="G1473", a|strong="G4160" man|strong="G3778" who|strong="G3739" has|strong="G2316" told|strong="G2980" you|strong="G5210" the|strong="G1161" truth which|strong="G3739" I|strong="G1473" heard from|strong="G3844" God|strong="G2316". Abraham didn’t|strong="G3588" do|strong="G4160" this|strong="G3778". 41You|strong="G5210" do|strong="G4160" the|strong="G1537" works|strong="G2041" of|strong="G1537" your|strong="G2192" father|strong="G3962".” They said to him, “We were not born of sexual immorality. We have one Father, God.”42Therefore Jesus said to them, “If|strong="G1487" God|strong="G2316" were|strong="G1510" your|strong="G2532" father|strong="G3962", you|strong="G5210" would|strong="G2316" love me|strong="G1473", for|strong="G1063" I|strong="G1473" came|strong="G2064" out|strong="G1831" and|strong="G2532" have|strong="G2532" come|strong="G2064" from|strong="G1537" God|strong="G2316". For|strong="G1063" I|strong="G1473" haven’t|strong="G3588" come|strong="G2064" of|strong="G1537" myself|strong="G1683", but|strong="G2532" he|strong="G2532" sent|strong="G2316" me|strong="G1473". 43Why|strong="G5101" don’t|strong="G3588" you|strong="G3754" understand|strong="G1097" my|strong="G1699" speech|strong="G3056"? Because|strong="G3754" you|strong="G3754" can|strong="G1410"’t|strong="G3588" hear|strong="G5101" my|strong="G1699" word|strong="G3056". 44You|strong="G5210" are|strong="G1510" of|strong="G1537" your|strong="G2532" father|strong="G3962" the|strong="G1722" devil|strong="G1228", and|strong="G2532" you|strong="G5210" want|strong="G2309" to|strong="G2532" do|strong="G4160" the|strong="G1722" desires|strong="G1939" of|strong="G1537" your|strong="G2532" father|strong="G3962". He|strong="G2532" was|strong="G1510" a|strong="G2532" murderer from|strong="G1537" the|strong="G1722" beginning, and|strong="G2532" doesn’t|strong="G3588" stand|strong="G2476" in|strong="G1722" the|strong="G1722" truth, because|strong="G3754" there|strong="G2532" is|strong="G1510" no|strong="G3756" truth in|strong="G1722" him|strong="G3588". When|strong="G3752" he|strong="G2532" speaks|strong="G2980" a|strong="G2532" lie|strong="G5579", he|strong="G2532" speaks|strong="G2980" on|strong="G1722" his|strong="G1722" own|strong="G2398"; for|strong="G3754" he|strong="G2532" is|strong="G1510" a|strong="G2532" liar|strong="G5583", and|strong="G2532" the|strong="G1722" father|strong="G3962" of|strong="G1537" lies. 45But|strong="G1161" because|strong="G3754" I|strong="G1473" tell|strong="G3004" the|strong="G1161" truth, you|strong="G3754" don’t|strong="G3588" believe|strong="G4100" me|strong="G1473". 46Which|strong="G5101" of|strong="G1537" you|strong="G5210" convicts|strong="G1651" me|strong="G1473" of|strong="G1537" sin? If|strong="G1487" I|strong="G1473" tell|strong="G3004" the|strong="G1537" truth, why|strong="G5101" do|strong="G5101" you|strong="G5210" not|strong="G3756" believe|strong="G4100" me|strong="G1473"? 47He|strong="G3754" who|strong="G3588" is|strong="G1510" of|strong="G1537" God|strong="G2316" hears the|strong="G1537" words|strong="G4487" of|strong="G1537" God|strong="G2316". For|strong="G3754" this|strong="G3778" cause|strong="G1223" you|strong="G5210" don’t|strong="G3588" hear, because|strong="G3754" you|strong="G5210" are|strong="G1510" not|strong="G3756" of|strong="G1537" God|strong="G2316".”48Then the Jews answered him, “Don’t we say well that you are a Samaritan, and have a demon?”49Jesus answered, “I|strong="G1473" don’t|strong="G3588" have|strong="G2192" a|strong="G2192" demon|strong="G1140", but|strong="G2532" I|strong="G1473" honor|strong="G5091" my|strong="G1473" Father|strong="G3962" and|strong="G2532" you|strong="G5210" dishonor me|strong="G1473". 50But|strong="G1161" I|strong="G1473" don’t|strong="G3588" seek|strong="G2212" my|strong="G2212" own glory|strong="G1391". There|strong="G2532" is|strong="G1510" one|strong="G3588" who|strong="G3588" seeks|strong="G2212" and|strong="G2532" judges|strong="G2919". 51Most certainly|strong="G3756", I|strong="G1437" tell|strong="G3004" you|strong="G5210", if|strong="G1437" a|strong="G1519" person|strong="G5100" keeps|strong="G5083" my|strong="G1699" word|strong="G3056", he|strong="G3588" will|strong="G5100" never|strong="G3756" see|strong="G2334" death|strong="G2288".”52Then the Jews said to him, “Now we know that you have a demon. Abraham died, as did the prophets; and you say, ‘If|strong="G1437" a|strong="G2192" man|strong="G5100" keeps|strong="G5083" my|strong="G5083" word|strong="G3056", he|strong="G2532" will|strong="G2532" never|strong="G3756" taste|strong="G1089" of|strong="G3056" death|strong="G2288".’53Are you greater than our father Abraham, who died? The prophets died. Who do you make yourself out to be?”54Jesus answered, “If|strong="G1437" I|strong="G1473" glorify|strong="G1392" myself|strong="G1683", my|strong="G1473" glory|strong="G1391" is|strong="G1510" nothing|strong="G3762". It|strong="G3754" is|strong="G1510" my|strong="G1473" Father|strong="G3962" who|strong="G3739" glorifies|strong="G1392" me|strong="G1473", of|strong="G2316" whom|strong="G3739" you|strong="G5210" say|strong="G3004" that|strong="G3754" he|strong="G3739" is|strong="G1510" our|strong="G2316" God|strong="G2316". 55You|strong="G5210" have|strong="G2532" not|strong="G3756" known|strong="G1097" him|strong="G3588", but|strong="G1161" I|strong="G1473" know|strong="G1492" him|strong="G3588". If|strong="G2579" I|strong="G1473" said|strong="G3004", ‘I|strong="G1473" don’t|strong="G3588" know|strong="G1492" him|strong="G3588",’ I|strong="G1473" would|strong="G2532" be|strong="G1510" like|strong="G3664" you|strong="G5210", a|strong="G2532" liar|strong="G5583". But|strong="G1161" I|strong="G1473" know|strong="G1492" him|strong="G3588" and|strong="G2532" keep|strong="G5083" his|strong="G5083" word|strong="G3056". 56Your|strong="G2532" father|strong="G3962" Abraham rejoiced|strong="G5463" to|strong="G2443" see|strong="G3708" my|strong="G1699" day|strong="G2250". He|strong="G2532" saw|strong="G1492" it|strong="G2532" and|strong="G2532" was|strong="G3588" glad|strong="G5463".”57The Jews therefore said to him, “You are not yet fifty years old! Have you seen Abraham?”58Jesus said to them, “Most certainly, I|strong="G1473" tell|strong="G3004" you|strong="G5210", before|strong="G4250" Abraham came|strong="G1096" into|strong="G1096" existence, I|strong="G1473" AM|strong="G1510".”59Therefore they took up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple, having gone through the middle of them, and so passed by.
