Luke 14

1 When he went into the house of one of the rulers of the Pharisees on a Sabbath to eat bread, they were watching him. 2 Behold, a certain man who had dropsy was in front of him. 3 Jesus, answering, spoke to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, “Is|strong="G3588" it|strong="G2532" lawful|strong="G1832" to|strong="G4314" heal|strong="G2323" on|strong="G1161" the|strong="G2532" Sabbath|strong="G4521"?” 4 But they were silent. He took him, and healed him, and let him go. 5 He answered them, “Which|strong="G3588" of|strong="G5207" you|strong="G5210", if|strong="G2532" your|strong="G2532" son|strong="G5207" or|strong="G2228" an|strong="G2532" ox|strong="G1016" fell|strong="G4098" into|strong="G1519" a|strong="G2532" well|strong="G2532", wouldn’t|strong="G3588" immediately|strong="G2112" pull him|strong="G3588" out|strong="G2532" on|strong="G1722" a|strong="G2532" Sabbath|strong="G4521" day|strong="G2250"?” 6 They couldn’t answer him regarding these things. 7 He spoke a parable to those who were invited, when he noticed how they chose the best seats, and said to them, 8 “When|strong="G3752" you|strong="G4771" are|strong="G1510" invited|strong="G2564" by|strong="G5259" anyone|strong="G5100" to|strong="G1519" a|strong="G1519" wedding|strong="G1062" feast|strong="G1062", don’t|strong="G3588" sit|strong="G2625" in|strong="G1519" the|strong="G1519" best seat, since|strong="G3379" perhaps|strong="G3379" someone|strong="G5100" more|strong="G1784" honorable than|strong="G3361" you|strong="G4771" might|strong="G2564" be|strong="G1510" invited|strong="G2564" by|strong="G5259" him|strong="G3588", 9 and|strong="G2532" he|strong="G2532" who|strong="G3588" invited|strong="G2564" both|strong="G2532" of|strong="G2532" you|strong="G4771" would|strong="G2532" come|strong="G2064" and|strong="G2532" tell|strong="G3004" you|strong="G4771", ‘Make|strong="G2532" room|strong="G5117" for|strong="G2532" this|strong="G3778" person|strong="G3778".’ Then|strong="G2532" you|strong="G4771" would|strong="G2532" begin, with|strong="G3326" shame, to|strong="G2532" take|strong="G2532" the|strong="G2532" lowest place|strong="G5117". 10 But|strong="G3588" when|strong="G3752" you|strong="G4771" are|strong="G1510" invited|strong="G2564", go|strong="G4198" and|strong="G2064" sit|strong="G3956" in|strong="G1519" the|strong="G1519" lowest place|strong="G5117", so|strong="G2443" that|strong="G2443" when|strong="G3752" he|strong="G3588" who|strong="G3588" invited|strong="G2564" you|strong="G4771" comes|strong="G2064", he|strong="G3588" may|strong="G2443" tell|strong="G3004" you|strong="G4771", ‘Friend|strong="G5384", move|strong="G4320" up|strong="G1519" higher.’ Then|strong="G5119" you|strong="G4771" will|strong="G1510" be|strong="G1510" honored|strong="G1391" in|strong="G1519" the|strong="G1519" presence|strong="G1799" of|strong="G1391" all|strong="G3956" who|strong="G3588" sit|strong="G3956" at|strong="G1519" the|strong="G1519" table|strong="G4873" with|strong="G1519" you|strong="G4771". 11 For|strong="G3754" everyone|strong="G3956" who|strong="G3588" exalts|strong="G5312" himself|strong="G1438" will|strong="G2532" be|strong="G2532" humbled|strong="G5013", and|strong="G2532" whoever|strong="G3748" humbles|strong="G5013" himself|strong="G1438" will|strong="G2532" be|strong="G2532" exalted|strong="G5312".” 12 He also said to the one who had invited him, “When|strong="G3752" you|strong="G4771" make|strong="G4160" a|strong="G1096" dinner|strong="G1173" or|strong="G2228" a|strong="G1096" supper|strong="G1173", don’t|strong="G3588" call|strong="G2564" your|strong="G2532" friends|strong="G5384", nor|strong="G3366" your|strong="G2532" brothers, nor|strong="G3366" your|strong="G2532" kinsmen|strong="G4773", nor|strong="G3366" rich|strong="G4145" neighbors|strong="G1069", or|strong="G2228" perhaps|strong="G3379" they|strong="G2532" might|strong="G2532" also|strong="G2532" return the|strong="G2532" favor, and|strong="G2532" pay you|strong="G4771" back. 13 But when|strong="G3752" you|strong="G3752" make|strong="G4160" a|strong="G4160" feast|strong="G1403", ask the|strong="G4160" poor|strong="G4434", the|strong="G4160" maimed, the|strong="G4160" lame|strong="G5560", or the|strong="G4160" blind|strong="G5185"; 14 and|strong="G2532" you|strong="G4771" will|strong="G1510" be|strong="G1510" blessed|strong="G3107", because|strong="G3754" they|strong="G2532" don’t|strong="G3588" have|strong="G2192" the|strong="G1722" resources to|strong="G2532" repay|strong="G2192" you|strong="G4771". For|strong="G1063" you|strong="G4771" will|strong="G1510" be|strong="G1510" repaid in|strong="G1722" the|strong="G1722" resurrection of|strong="G2532" the|strong="G1722" righteous|strong="G1342".” 15 When one of those who sat at the table with him heard these things, he said to him, “Blessed is he who will feast in God’s Kingdom!” 16 But he said to him, “A|strong="G2532" certain|strong="G5100" man|strong="G5100" made|strong="G4160" a|strong="G2532" great|strong="G3173" supper|strong="G1173", and|strong="G2532" he|strong="G2532" invited|strong="G2564" many|strong="G4183" people|strong="G4160". 17 He|strong="G2532" sent|strong="G2532" out|strong="G2532" his|strong="G2532" servant|strong="G1401" at|strong="G2235" supper|strong="G1173" time|strong="G5610" to|strong="G2532" tell|strong="G3004" those|strong="G3588" who|strong="G3588" were|strong="G1510" invited|strong="G2564", ‘Come|strong="G2064", for|strong="G3754" everything is|strong="G1510" ready|strong="G2092" now|strong="G2532".’ 18 They|strong="G2532" all|strong="G3956" as|strong="G2532" one|strong="G1520" began|strong="G2192" to|strong="G2532" make|strong="G2532" excuses|strong="G3868". “The|strong="G2532" first|strong="G4413" said|strong="G3004" to|strong="G2532" him|strong="G3588", ‘I|strong="G1473" have|strong="G2192" bought a|strong="G2192" field, and|strong="G2532" I|strong="G1473" must|strong="G2192" go|strong="G1831" and|strong="G2532" see|strong="G3708" it|strong="G2532". Please|strong="G2065" have|strong="G2192" me|strong="G1473" excused|strong="G3868".’ 19 “Another|strong="G2087" said|strong="G3004", ‘I|strong="G1473" have|strong="G2192" bought five|strong="G4002" yoke|strong="G2201" of|strong="G2532" oxen|strong="G1016", and|strong="G2532" I|strong="G1473" must|strong="G2192" go|strong="G4198" try|strong="G1381" them|strong="G3004" out|strong="G2532". Please|strong="G2065" have|strong="G2192" me|strong="G1473" excused|strong="G3868".’ 20 “Another|strong="G2087" said|strong="G3004", ‘I|strong="G2532" have|strong="G2532" married|strong="G1060" a|strong="G2532" wife|strong="G1135", and|strong="G2532" therefore|strong="G1223" I|strong="G2532" can|strong="G1410"’t come|strong="G2064".’ 21 “That|strong="G3588" servant|strong="G1401" came|strong="G1831", and|strong="G2532" told|strong="G3004" his|strong="G1519" lord|strong="G2962" these|strong="G3778" things|strong="G3778". Then|strong="G2532" the|strong="G2532" master|strong="G2962" of|strong="G2532" the|strong="G2532" house|strong="G3617", being|strong="G2532" angry|strong="G3710", said|strong="G3004" to|strong="G1519" his|strong="G1519" servant|strong="G1401", ‘Go|strong="G1831" out|strong="G1831" quickly|strong="G5030" into|strong="G1519" the|strong="G2532" streets|strong="G4113" and|strong="G2532" lanes|strong="G4505" of|strong="G2532" the|strong="G2532" city|strong="G4172", and|strong="G2532" bring|strong="G2532" in|strong="G1519" the|strong="G2532" poor|strong="G4434", maimed, blind|strong="G5185", and|strong="G2532" lame|strong="G5560".’ 22 “The|strong="G2532" servant|strong="G1401" said|strong="G3004", ‘Lord|strong="G2962", it|strong="G2532" is|strong="G1510" done|strong="G1096" as|strong="G2532" you|strong="G3739" commanded|strong="G2004", and|strong="G2532" there|strong="G2532" is|strong="G1510" still|strong="G2089" room|strong="G5117".’ 23 “The|strong="G2532" lord|strong="G2962" said|strong="G3004" to|strong="G1519" the|strong="G2532" servant|strong="G1401", ‘Go|strong="G1831" out|strong="G1831" into|strong="G1519" the|strong="G2532" highways|strong="G3598" and|strong="G2532" hedges|strong="G5418", and|strong="G2532" compel them|strong="G3588" to|strong="G1519" come|strong="G1831" in|strong="G1519", that|strong="G2443" my|strong="G1525" house|strong="G3624" may|strong="G2532" be|strong="G2532" filled|strong="G1072". 24 For|strong="G1063" I|strong="G1473" tell|strong="G3004" you|strong="G5210" that|strong="G3754" none|strong="G3762" of|strong="G3588" those|strong="G3588" men|strong="G3588" who|strong="G3588" were|strong="G3588" invited|strong="G2564" will|strong="G1473" taste|strong="G1089" of|strong="G3588" my|strong="G1473" supper|strong="G1173". For|strong="G1063" many are|strong="G3588" called|strong="G2564", but|strong="G1063" few are|strong="G3588" chosen.’” 25 Now great multitudes were going with him. He turned and said to them, 26 “If|strong="G1487" anyone|strong="G5100" comes|strong="G2064" to|strong="G4314" me|strong="G1473", and|strong="G2532" doesn’t|strong="G3588" disregard his|strong="G1438" own|strong="G1438" father|strong="G3962", mother|strong="G3384", wife|strong="G1135", children|strong="G5043", brothers, and|strong="G2532" sisters, yes|strong="G2089", and|strong="G2532" his|strong="G1438" own|strong="G1438" life|strong="G5590" also|strong="G2532", he|strong="G2532" can|strong="G1410"’t|strong="G3588" be|strong="G1510" my|strong="G1473" disciple|strong="G3101". 27 Whoever|strong="G3748" doesn’t|strong="G3588" bear|strong="G2532" his|strong="G1438" own|strong="G1438" cross|strong="G4716" and|strong="G2532" come|strong="G2064" after|strong="G3694" me|strong="G1473", can|strong="G1410"’t|strong="G3588" be|strong="G1510" my|strong="G1473" disciple|strong="G3101". 28 For|strong="G1063" which|strong="G3588" of|strong="G1537" you|strong="G5210", desiring|strong="G2309" to|strong="G1519" build|strong="G3618" a|strong="G2192" tower|strong="G4444", doesn’t|strong="G3588" first|strong="G4413" sit|strong="G2523" down|strong="G2523" and|strong="G4413" count|strong="G2192" the|strong="G1519" cost|strong="G1160", to|strong="G1519" see if|strong="G1487" he|strong="G3588" has|strong="G2192" enough to|strong="G1519" complete it|strong="G1063"? 29 Or|strong="G2532" perhaps|strong="G3379", when|strong="G2532" he|strong="G2532" has|strong="G2532" laid|strong="G5087" a|strong="G2532" foundation|strong="G2310" and|strong="G2532" isn’t|strong="G3588" able|strong="G2480" to|strong="G2443" finish|strong="G1615", everyone|strong="G3956" who|strong="G3588" sees|strong="G2334" begins to|strong="G2443" mock|strong="G1702" him|strong="G3588", 30 saying|strong="G3004", ‘This|strong="G3778" man|strong="G3778" began to|strong="G2532" build|strong="G3618" and|strong="G2532" wasn’t|strong="G3588" able|strong="G2480" to|strong="G2532" finish|strong="G1615".’ 31 Or|strong="G2228" what|strong="G5101" king|strong="G3588", as|strong="G1519" he|strong="G3588" goes|strong="G4198" to|strong="G1519" encounter|strong="G5221" another|strong="G2087" king|strong="G3588" in|strong="G1722" war|strong="G4171", will|strong="G5101" not|strong="G3780" sit|strong="G2523" down|strong="G2523" first|strong="G4413" and|strong="G2064" consider|strong="G1011" whether|strong="G1487" he|strong="G3588" is|strong="G1510" able|strong="G1415" with|strong="G3326" ten|strong="G1176" thousand|strong="G5505" to|strong="G1519" meet|strong="G3588" him|strong="G3588" who|strong="G5101" comes|strong="G2064" against|strong="G1909" him|strong="G3588" with|strong="G3326" twenty|strong="G1501" thousand|strong="G5505"? 32 Or|strong="G1161" else|strong="G3361", while|strong="G1161" the|strong="G1161" other|strong="G1161" is|strong="G1510" yet|strong="G2089" a|strong="G1510" great way off, he|strong="G1161" sends an|strong="G1510" envoy and|strong="G1161" asks|strong="G2065" for|strong="G4314" conditions of|strong="G3588" peace|strong="G1515". 33 So|strong="G3779" therefore|strong="G3767", whoever|strong="G3739" of|strong="G1537" you|strong="G5210" who|strong="G3739" doesn’t|strong="G3588" renounce all|strong="G3956" that|strong="G3739" he|strong="G3739" has|strong="G3739", he|strong="G3739" can|strong="G1410"’t|strong="G3588" be|strong="G1510" my|strong="G3956" disciple|strong="G3101". 34 “Salt is|strong="G3588" good|strong="G2570", but|strong="G1161" if|strong="G1437" the|strong="G1722" salt becomes flat and|strong="G2532" tasteless|strong="G3471", with|strong="G1722" what|strong="G5101" do|strong="G5101" you|strong="G1437" season it|strong="G2532"? 35 It|strong="G1510" is|strong="G1510" fit|strong="G2111" neither|strong="G3777" for|strong="G1519" the|strong="G1519" soil|strong="G1093" nor|strong="G3777" for|strong="G1519" the|strong="G1519" manure|strong="G2874" pile|strong="G2874". It|strong="G1510" is|strong="G1510" thrown out|strong="G1854". He|strong="G3588" who|strong="G3588" has|strong="G2192" ears|strong="G3775" to|strong="G1519" hear, let|strong="G1510" him|strong="G3588" hear.”
